Journal #7 - Calendars

Calendars are important in a classroom and to an educator in more ways than one. Using an online calendar can be helpful because a teacher will be able to access it in many different places, and they would be able to send it to a principal or substitute without having to give them their actual calendar or make copies. There are also many calendars that can print so that a teacher can hand-out paper copies if needed.

One thread I followed was about a new Facebook application that is called "StudyGroups". It allows people to create a group page with other classmates or colleagues and share information, chat, post pictures, graphs and even problems sets to work on. It also allows one to post due dates so that as a group, everyone stays on track. This seems like a great idea, however, I tried to use it on my own and there seem to still be some technical glitches to work out.

Another thread I followed was a teacher looking for a calendar that was larger than their outlook calendar and able to create a weekly lesson plan. I tried going to the websites of a few different suggestions and I found one that actually links one's lesson plans to state standards so that they are able to follow which standards they have taught throughout the semester. I thought that it would be a great way to stay on top of one's teaching and organization all in one.

I think the calendar that helps a teacher keep track of the NETS and topics they have taught is great! Anything that can keep a teacher on track an informed on their teaching through out the year is great.

Wow, the idea of an online calendar that helps you make your lesson plans following the NETS is a really cool idea. I would think that this would be a great tool to use to stay organized and to make sure that you are hitting all the standards!

If they get the glitches worked out on that facebook application it sounds like a great way to use a social networking program in a positive way. Sometimes in high school those are not the greatest things but it would be nice to see students use them constructively.

As a substitute teacher, I love the idea. If you get sick and cant come in to make a lesson plan, e-mail your calendar to the school and the school can give it to the Substitute. That makes great sense and good IDEA.

I think this is another great way to save paper and access information from other places. I also mentioned FaceBook when I discussed Collaborative Documents so it was good to know that you checked out the site and found some glitches. I would love to know which website you found that linked one's lesson plan to the the state standards (I'm sure other would like to know too).

Online calenders are a great idea, especially for teachers, who need to have such a planned out schedule! And for it to be online, so that whenever a principal or peer needs to see it or review it, its so much easier!
